Contextual Leadership Initiative
of the Western Mission Cluster
A Collaboration of PLTS and Luther Seminary

Although all education is contextual, underlying the Contextual Leadership Initiative is a conviction that social and ecclesiastical context is essential to the preparation of Christian leaders. The CLI represents a commitment to ensure that the contexts in which Christian mission occurs is approached respectfully, seriously and critically.

In response to God's call to prepare leaders for the Christian church, individual congregations, organizations and neighborhoods become communities of learning and service for seminary students.

Internship

A full year of internship, usually in a parish, is an integral part of the course of study and a requirement for graduation. The purpose of the internship program is to provide ministerial experience under the supervision of a pastor who becomes an adjunct faculty member.

Cross Cultural Education

God's mission invites and sends us into the cultures of all nations and all peoples for the sake of the gospel. Cross-cultural education provides the opportunity for students to encounter a very pluralistic and diverse world as the context for ministry so that they might better learn essential interpretive skills for confessing the Christian faith and engaging in Christian mission.

Teaching Parish

PLTS and Luther Seminary offer parallel programs as an essential part of confessional, missional, and contextual theological education. Leadership requires thinking, reflecting, and acting theologically within the contexts of classroom and Christian community.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

CPE is an educational experience available to all students by applying to and being accepted by an accredited CPE program. CPE or an equivalent is an ordination requirement for students seeking to be ordained in the ELCA.

Diaconal Ministry

Diaconal Ministry is a form of rostered leadership ministry designed to enable the ELCA to fulfill its mission more effectively. Diaconal Ministers are called by this church to positions that exemplify the servant life and seek to equip and motivate others to live it. Diaconal ministers shall seek in a variety of ways to empower, equip, and support the baptized people of God in the ministry of Jesus Christ and the mission of God in the world.
