Interviews

Supervising pastors will have the opportunity to interview candidates at either school February 11-22, 2008.

Supervisors should contact the Contextual Leadership Initiative office before February 1 to schedule an interview date.

Lay Committees

The CLI offers this online Lay Committee Handbook. It provides useful information to help guide the appointment of committee members, as well as how the committee should be conducted throughout the internship.

CLI Newsletter

CLI publishes a monthly internship newsletter, Ministry in Context, to keep interns, supervisors, lay committees and other supporters informed of events and processes. Sign up to subscribe to Ministry in Context online.

For Congregations

Apply to receive an intern
(Supervisor's Application)

To be considered an internship site, the congregation's pastor must complete a congregation/site application. Applications are due by February 1. Completed site applications will be viewable, in their entirety, to students from both schools, thus increasing the number of students who will be potential candidates for an internship placement.

The CLI is excited to have this application process online! As technology continues to increase in value to our work, we can extend its benefits to our internship supervisors. One distinct advantage to having this application online is that a supervisor will only have to complete the application once. In subsequent years, the supervisor will only need to make minor changes and updates to re-activate the application.

Horizon Sites

The Horizon Internship Program is an alternative internship program. It is a collaborative venture of the Division for Ministry and the Division for Outreach, in cooperation with the synods and seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is an intensive and transformational opportunity which aims to enrich the talents and skills of future rostered leaders for the ministry and mission of the church.

The responsibility of funding the internship is normally divided equally between the ELCA, synod and ministry site.

Congregations wishing to pursue this program will complete the Horizon Site Application form, in addition to the regular ELCA congregational site application.

Expectations for Successful Internships

Supervisors and congregations wishing to join the program and mentor an intern are expected to read the CLI's expectations of internship sites. Awareness of these general expectations and a willingness to meet them will be key to a successful internship.

Team Building Workshops

Supervisors of the sites receiving an intern are expected to participate in a Team Building Workshop with their intern. Depending on which seminary the intern comes from, supervisors will attend one of the following:

  • May 19-20, 2008 in St. Paul, MN, for Luther Seminary interns and their supervisors
  • May 28-29, 2008 in Berkeley, CA, for PLTS interns and their supervisors

Evaluation forms

Interns, supervisors and lay committees will participate in a series of evaluations throughout the internship year. Evaluations are conducted at 3 months, mid-year, 9 months, and end of year (final recommendation).
